Greenville Spirit-Filled Churches

What does the term "Spirit-Filled" mean?

The term "Spirit-filled" is a synonym for "having received the Holy Spirit evidenced by speaking in tongues." "Spirit-filled" churches are also referred to as Pentecostal or Charismatic churches. While virtually all Christian churches believe in receiving the Holy Spirit, many (particularly those of a Baptist of Presbyterian background) believe it is received when a person accepts Christ as savior and that such a person has received the fullness of everything God has for them. In other words, they believe that there is no subsequent baptism or outpouring of the Holy Ghost on an individual. Most spirit-filled churches differ in that they believe in a baptism of the Holy Ghost for empowerment and sanctification subsequent to salvation.

Within spirit-filled churches there is some diversity of opinion regarding when an individual receives the baptism of the Spirit. Apostolic churches, which trace their teachings back to the book of Acts, teach that the outpouring of the Holy Ghost and the moment of salvation are one and the same - that an individual is saved, empowered, and sanctified all at the same time. Other spirit-filled churches, such as the Assembly of God and Church of God branches, hold the view that an individual is saved by simply accepting Christ as savior and that the Holy Ghost baptism comes at a later time or may not come at all.
